Obituary of Susanna K. Gaffney
CARTHAGE – Susanna K. Gaffney, 86, of County Route 36, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
Susanna was born on June 10, 1932 in Lyons Falls, New York, a daughter to the late Leo James and Margaret K. (Dicob) Hoffman. She graduated from Lyons Falls High School and went on to graduate from Utica College with a degree in business. She worked at Ingersolls Farm Equipment, Fox Drugs and Gould Papermill. She retired as the Director of Purchase Management at Carthage Area Hospital.
On August 19, 1950, Susanna married Charles ”Pat” Gaffney. Charles passed away on November 3, 1981.
Susanna was an avid reader and a bowler at Lewis Lanes in Lowville and Carthage Bowl. She worked full time her entire life and was always considered a “career woman”.
She was the treasurer for Northern New York Purchase Management and was a member of several organizations including St. Anne’s Alter Rosary Society, Martinsburg Fire Department Auxiliary, West Carthage Fire Department Auxiliary, Northern New York Ladies Auxiliary and LAFASNY.
She is survived by her children, Katherine (Richard) Davis of West Carthage; Kelly (Ricky) Swem of Carthage; Melissa (Keith) Adams of Little York, NY; Charles (Debra) Gaffney of Lowville; Mary (DeVere) Rumble of Copenhagen; Lucinda (Raymond) Lear III of Watertown; a sister, Sarah O’Leary of Oregon; a brother, Leo James Hoffman Jr. of Rome, NY; a sister-in-law, Delores Hoffman Cross of Hickory, NC; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was known as “Grandma Sue” to many.
Susanna is predeceased by her husband, Charles; a son, Patrick Gaffney who passed away in 2004; and a brother, Joseph Hoffman.
Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 from 2-5 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State Street, Carthage, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow in the funeral home Chapel at 5 PM with Rev. Wayne Arnold officiating. A gathering will follow the service at 6 PM in the West Carthage Community Room. All are welcome.
Burial will be held in the spring at Calvary Cemetery in Port Leyden, NY.
