Obituary of Mary Louise Mono

CARTHAGE - Mary Louise Mono, 77, entered her eternal resting place with the Lord early Friday morning, January 25, 2019 at the Samaritan Summit Village where she had been a resident since March of 2018.

Mary was born on September 8, 1941 in Carthage, the daughter of Paul and Virginia (Morse) Prievo.

Mary worked for many years at Lally Manufacturing in Herrings and Carthage. She had many funny stories about working at Lally’s with her friends, including listening to the soap operas on her radio.  In Mary’s later years, she became a medical transcriptionist and was employed by IME in Texas just prior to her retirement. 

As a member of the New Testament Fellowship Church, she enjoyed writing stories for the church bulletin. Mary was also an adopted mom to many teens.  Her arms and home was always open to those that needed a safe place.

A marriage in 1960 to Fredrick L. Phelps later ended in divorce.

On September 8, 1973 in Carthage, a marriage to Roger D. Mono became her lifelong commitment. They were married in the United Methodist Church in Carthage by Rev Lord.  Roger and Mary enjoyed music together. Mary would travel with Roger as he played in numerous bands, so she and her friends could dance all night long. Then, the music bug really bit Mary, and she also began to perform in their band named “Midnight Sun”.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; a sister, Betty Farney of Carthage; three daughters, Deborah and Stanley Atkins of Carthage; Robin Phelps Joyce of San Antonio, Texas; Tamara Lloyd of Syracuse; a son, Claude and Valerie Phelps of Felts Mills; brothers-in-law, Rick Mono of Watertown; Terry and Eleanor Mono of Natural Bridge; and Gale and Jody Mono of Natural Bridge.

She is predeceased by a daughter, Julie Ann Phelps, a brother, Francis Prievo, as well as a sister, Joyce Ayers.

One of the many joys in her life was her family, most of all her 9 grandchildren, Christina Atkins, Amanda (Phelps) Garcia, Jennifer (Atkins) Johnsen, Chad Phelps, Naomi Kealy, Stanley Atkins, Brent Phelps, Jacob Joyce and Jesse Joyce. She truly loved watching her 12 great-grandchildren grow.  The grandchildren would always ask for gramma’s help with crafting because she just seemed to be an expert on all types of crafts.

We will all remember her as she would sit in her comfy chair in front of the big living room window, looking out at the birds on the bird feeders.

Mary’s family would like to thank the staff at Samaritan Summit Village, Tia, Jessica, Jennifer, Blair, Denise, and our newest team mate, Jennifer Patterson NP, for making her feel as comfortable as you could.  You all loved her as your own mother and we truly appreciate what you have done for her. We will also never forget mom’s neighbor (once again), Chrissy Hill. Chrissy, we love you for watching over her when we were not there. Your reminiscing of the earlier years of you, mom and Ana Banana dancing brought smiles to not only mom, but to all of us, too.

Per Mary request, there will be no calling hours.  A celebration of life will be held at the carthage VFW on February 16th from 1pm -3pm.
