WEST CARTHAGE – William Joseph Scherer, 69, 1 Bridge St., died Wednesday morning, May 18th, 2017 after being stricken ill at home.
Born on April 8, 1948 in Watertown, the son of John J. and Anne C. Folgert Scherer, he attended and graduated from the Carthage Augustinian Academy.
He served a one year apprenticeship with the former Virkler Funeral Home in Lowville. He attended and graduated from the former Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, before joining his father in the operation of the Scherer Funeral Home in West Carthage. He became Licensed Manager of the firm in 1975 and continued to own and operate the Funeral Home until he sold the business in April 2008 to Cullen D. Lundy of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. Following the sale, he continued to serve as the Manager of the Scherer Funeral Home portion of the business.
In September 2008, he began a career in retail sales, working in the Men's Department of the Burlington Coat Factory in the Salmon Run Mall, Watertown.
On April 14, 1973, in the St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, he married Kay Suzanne Flynn. He was a longtime Lector and Eucharistic Minister of St. James, a Life Member and Past Exalted Ruler of the BPOE Lodge 1762, Carthage, a Benevolent Member of the West Carthage Fire Department, a member of the K of C Council 291, Carthage, a member of the Bishop Conroy General Assembly K of C (4th Degree) and a former member of the Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Kay, two daughters; Mrs. Jesse (Shannon) Lennox, Watertown, Erica L. Russell and her companion Joshua Stanford, Carthage, six grandchildren; Jordis, Taylar, Eva, Brent, Maive and Josalyn. Also surviving are his sister, Mrs. Douglas (Patricia A.) Fulcher of Mooresville, North Carolina, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A brother, John Edward Scherer died before him.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd at 10:30 AM at the St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Donald Robinson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in New St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 22nd, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
